Lightning bolts occasionally come out of the top of a thundercloud. Since the classic cloud charge configuration consists of positive charge over negative charge, it is often assumed that the bolt must transfer positive charge to ground. Lightning Mapping Arrays show what is going on:

The flash grows as a bidirectional tree: a negative leader moves into the positive charge region, but it escapes via the side of the cloud towards the ground - a "Bolt from the Blue" which may strike over 5 kilometers away from the cloud edge. It carries net negative charge as it is rooted within the dominant negative cloud charge region by the positive leader branch which started simultaneously.

Szóval nyugodtan elfelejthetnénk már azt, hogy ránézésre, meg a dörgés hangja alapján (amit ezer dolog befolyásol) próbáljuk kitalálni, hogy egy villámlás negatív vagy pozitív volt. Egyetlen módszer van ennek eldöntésére: a villámáramot detektáló berendezések.
